Running an effective debrief after immersive safety simulation

The debrief creates value

A simulation produces emotions, decisions and records. Without a debrief, a learner may remember a spectacular detail rather than the prevention principle. The facilitator restores context, helps articulate reasoning and builds a bridge to work. Include this in the schedule: a fifteen-minute scenario may need ten to twenty minutes of discussion.

Begin with the learner’s account

Ask: “What did you notice?”, “When did you hesitate?”, “Which information guided you?” These questions reveal gaps between the record and the intention without immediately assigning fault. Always distinguish interface difficulty, missing information and the safety decision.

Choose a few moments

Discuss two or three events tied to objectives: a recognised hazard, missed check, appropriate stop or choice with incomplete information. Use data as evidence, never a verdict. A long response can show caution, control difficulty or professional uncertainty; facilitator context remains essential.

Connect to work

Ask where the signal appears on site, which procedure applies and who authorises restart. Invite the group to name real obstacles. If several people cannot find information, improving access may be more useful than repeating an instruction.

Close and follow up

Retain one practice, one check to strengthen and one follow-up action. For formal authorisation, use the required process: simulation is not automatically a regulatory certificate. Keep a proportionate record, limit access and explain how scores or comments will be used.
